What is Energy Healing?
What is energy?
The origin of the word energy can be traced to the Greek energeia and means “in, within”, or “work”. We generally associate energy with liveliness, vigour, power or activity. In the context we use it here, we could paraphrase it and say that, energy is a rejuvenating force that works in the body to balance and maintain health on all levels.
We take in energy in the form of food and water, by breathing in air and by exposing our bodies to sunlight. Likewise, we absorb energies in the form of vibrating frequencies from the earth and from the cosmos. As this type of energy is invisible, it is more difficult for us to appreciate. Nonetheless, our system receives nourishment from the physical plane as well as from the unseen realities.
Thus, the human organism is very resourceful. It can obtain energy through metabolic processes, through entrainment and assimilation of vibrating frequencies and through relationship; by receiving energy from and via people or things. These modes of absorption constantly interact and affect each other, creating a range of dynamics for the benefit or detriment of the individual.
The body and mind cannot function in isolation. Our biology, psychology and sociology are intimately connected and hence influence each other. If there is a weakness in any of these areas, then the system as a whole becomes compromised.
Why does energy healing work?
Energy healing does not require the individual to consciously process information about themselves, their lives and their health. It does not require a person to be aware or have insight into his or her problems. What energy healing does offer is, an opportunity for individuals to discover and come to their own conclusions about whatever they are suffering (mental, physical or emotional).
Energy healing bypasses the rational thinking mindand allows, in a very gentle, loving and organic way for intuition and the innate wisdom of the self to emerge and exercise its power. The person will feel different, but may not immediately know what shifts have occurred. Insights may emerge instantly or over time.
What does energy do and how do you do it?
Our whole life is a ceaseless interplay of relationships. They mirror back to us that which we need to see about ourselves to get relief. They challenge our world view, tear us down or build us up. But in every case they are a therapeutic tool, which used with insight can greatly benefit our emotional and physical wellbeing.
If we lack the awareness that our relationships are our tools, then it is very easy to allow them to impact our lives in unfavourable ways. Let us presume that Sue wants to leave her husband. She is unable to express her unhappiness to him and represses her feelings. These feelings build up over time and she starts to display physical symptoms; heart palpitations, headaches, depression etc.
We know that everything is energy, a vibration, a frequency in ceaseless motion. Thoughts of an unhelpful nature have a lower frequency, and thoughts that are affirming have a higher frequency. When in balance, the body plays a symphony of frequencies that is harmonious and supportive of our wellbeing. When there is prolonged negativity or tension, the lower frequencies will impact and influence other parts of the system and the individual will feel the first signs of deterioration.
The energy therapist is simply another “relationship” to the client, but one that is aware how she can impact the individual. The therapist aligns herself with higher energies by mere intention, i.e., engaging in a process that allows her frequency level to increase. In effect, the therapist becomes a bridge between the source (universal energies) and the individual. The therapist is not a healer per say, but rather a channel for higher vibrations that are being offered to the individual.
Why is it important for people and what are the benefits to them?
Our body is an intrinsically intelligent organism. It continuously strives to maintain a healthy balance in the face of abuse or dishonour of any nature. Our ability to draw on resources to alleviate suffering is infinite. Relief can be had by going for a walk, undergoing an operation, talking to a friend, having a massage or just sitting quietly with your child. Any of those things can and do encourage a positive experience, albeit ever so imperceptible to the senses and hence often times undervalued.
However, these are the necessary precursors, on the path of any recovery, to a mind that is at peace; if only for a moment. The body immediately responds to this stimulus, at first on a chemical and cellular level and progresses into the denser parts, facilitating the easing of physical or emotional pain and discomfort. We can achieve all this on our own, but sometimes it becomes necessary and advisable to employ outside sources of support.
The initial gain that arises from a healing session is the unmistakable feeling of relaxation, quiet and peace. For highly strung individuals or for those who experience relentless stressors in their lives, that alone can be an improvement. If the mind is foggy and plagued by a negative loop of thoughts, where solutions seem out of reach, the healing can aid to ease this tension. The mind becomes more still. These results can be experienced in one single session.
Ailments of a physical nature may require more focus, commitment and time on the part of the individual and the therapist. A great deal of responsibility rests with the individual however, as success relies on their willingness and cooperation to introspect and view the signs of any illness as a call for help. It is not just a matter of getting rid of back pain for instance, but to discover what meaning it has for us and then to make the necessary adjustments in our lives that will support recovery.
The body speaks a simple language of pain and discomfort, to alert us that change is in order. Once this is understood and respected, it can lead the individual on a path of discovering the self in new and exciting ways.
